This week is Random Acts of Publicity week, the time to help promote your friends’ books. It’s a worthwhile initiative in line with Ergo’s mission statement, so join in on the fun!

It’s the first of September! No more summer holiday! It’s the beginning of the end of summer! Soon it will be fall, and then winter will arrive, and it will be cold and wet and nasty weather… Just thinking about it makes me gloomy already. There is however a bright sunset at the horizon. Summer is usually the low point in webfiction activity, but once September arrives, everyone seems motivated to kick gear in action big time again!

The first to kick off this fresh spirit of action is the infamous Gabriel Gadfly, Webliterate Poet Extra-ordinaire, who recently wrote a very interesting article on the state of online poetry for us. This week he posted his first Video Blog – after some serious pestering from both Anna and me – and used it to introduce a fantabulous new concept called Web Poetry Wednesdays. Indeed, it seems Wednesdays are turning into a day to recommend everything you like to read on the web, fiction over here, and poetry at Gabriel’s.

I’ll let him introduce the complete concept himself, so you can watch Gabriel’s Video Blog Devirginization below, before we venture into our weekly recommendations.

So I heard a little rumor today… Or rather I received a confirmed piece of information by the author herself on twitter… But an air of mystery always adds to the flair of the story. Anyway, Meilin Miranda has officially finished converting/editing/rewriting her quite famous “An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom” to it’s official book/print form. Since this was quite a big crowdfunded project, and the webfiction version of the story was and is quite popular, I thought it was worth a mention. Here’s her original tweet:

Queue Kool and the Gang  with Celebration I’d say! And be sure to check Meilin’s website next Monday, because then the brand new version of her acclaimed story will broadcast afresh!

Personally I’ve been slightly preoccupied with Goodreads.com, which I find totally mesmerizing. All those books to discover. Really, the digital revolution has crazily expanded my reading possibilies (as a person from a small language). It’s amazing how many great (and/or trashy) novels there are out there.

Speaking of which, did you know goodreads has a webfiction group? And a list where you can vote on your favorite indie books? It’s awesome!

In other news

This week I’d like to honor #webficwed to the late Chris Al-Aswad, who passed away at the end of july. Chris was better known as Lethe Bashar in the webfiction community, which was the main character in his Novel of Life. He started quite early with publishing his fiction online, and was an early and always interesting commenter on Novelr. Later he founded Escape into Life, an excellent art magazine, which focused on such a great variety of artistic creation it was sometimes mind-blowing.

I didn’t know him that well, but he was a bright star in my webfiction milkyway, and I’ll miss his enthusiasm, insight, and wonderful surprising art discoveries.

Tomorrow will mark the third week of the newly fledged io9.com fiction community entitled Thursday Tales, which was set up by @alphabete. It works in a similar fashion to Twitter’s #fridayflash community, with authors posting stories every Thursday. Check it out!
